Pewter

For established US business owners

Could your company's records generate licensing income? Find out without handing over files.

Start with a few questions about your firm. It takes about two minutes, with no files or logins, and there is no cost to you. Your firm's details go to our licensing partner only so it can prepare an estimate. You approve every term in writing.

What may make records a fit

  • 20+ peopleFull-time employees, currently or at your busiest.
  • 3+ yearsOf email, files and records still available.
  • US-basedEnglish is the main working language.
  • Any statusOpen, closing or closed, provided the records remain.

Demand is strongest for records that document skilled work from start to finish: logistics, accounting, engineering, construction, distribution, manufacturing, trades and professional services. Some regulated, privileged or third-party records may be excluded. Meeting these criteria is no guarantee of an offer.

Questions owners bring to the first call

Is this a genuine opportunity, or just a pitch?

This is an active market. Our licensing partner says it has paid firms with 60 to 100 people $350,000 to $650,000; Google's $10 million winning bid for Spirit Airlines' records appears in a federal court filing. Neither transaction involved us. You'll receive your offer in writing before making a commitment, and many firms receive offers below these amounts.

Will I have to pay?

No charge at any stage. When a deal closes, our licensing partner pays Pewter a fee. Without a deal, there's no fee.

What are your roles, and who is your client?

Pewter identifies and qualifies opportunities, assesses your records, presents the offer and coordinates the deal. Our licensing partner makes the offer, signs the license with you and pays you; you'll know its identity before signing. Our partner pays our fee, so we don't act as your lawyer or agent. We aren't a law firm or a registered broker-dealer, and we recommend that your own counsel review the agreement.

Do I give up my data?

No. The arrangement licenses an agreed, de-identified copy. Your original files and ownership remain unchanged.

Could clients or employees be identified?

Before delivery, names, contact details, account numbers, credentials and payment details are removed or replaced. You may exclude regulated, privileged or third-party records. No method eliminates every risk, so you review a sample and the process before signing. How records are handled.

Who can access records before I sign?

Nobody without your consent. We may request a small sample to assess quality before an offer; Pewter or the licensing partner may review it. You decide what the sample contains and may decline. The full export takes place only once you sign.

Who uses the data, and for what purpose?

Authorized AI developers use it to train and evaluate models, as your agreement specifies. The terms you approve spell out exclusivity and permitted uses. Our free owner's guide, Before You Sell Your Data, covers terms and questions to resolve before you sign.

How much time will this take from my team?

Expect to spend a few hours: two or three calls plus a brief inventory of your systems. If an export is required, your IT person or provider handles it with our coordination. No one needs to produce new data or tidy anything up.

What if I don't know what data we have?

That's true for most owners. Tell us which tools you've used over time, for example email, shared drives or your accounting or operating system, and we'll determine what's available on the call. Prefer to estimate it yourself beforehand? Our no-cost guide explains where to find the numbers in Google, Microsoft 365, Slack and a dozen other tools.

Why is now the time?

Labs are purchasing today. A single AI data company has committed $1 billion over the next twelve months. The value is in the history you still hold: when subscriptions end or a firm closes, archives are deleted and their value disappears.
